The Diorama Room

The Diorama RoomThe Northwest room contains a DIORAMA showing the Lake Champlain basin in a scale model, Route 9 in New York State on the west, Route 7 to the Green Mountains of Vermont on the east, from Ticonderoga in the south, to St Jean, Quebec on the north. Seven audio-visual programs tell the area history from the ice age to the development of the Central Vermont Railway. The Confederate Raid is the feature story in this room. Maps and archival photographs of heritage buildings further display our local history. Models of the cars used on the St Albans Traction Company trolley line active between 1900 and 1920 are displayed along with a model of the route from the Bay to Swanton.

Central Vermont Railway Room

Railroad RoomThe Northeast room is dedicated to the story of the Central Vermont Railway. The century-old waiting room from a country depot includes the agent's office with a lively recording of a dispatcher at work. The collection includes a model of the 1923 roundhouse, railroad lanterns, bells, maps, and other interesting paraphernalia. Great photographs show the evolution of the railroad facility and locomotives. This exhibit takes you from past to present day railroading with a model train railroad that includes Thomas the Tank. It is a fun place for the old and present generation.

Military Room

Military Room Welcome to the military room of the St. Albans Historical Museum. The theme of this room is the "Citizen Soldier." The artifacts on display span the length and breadth of our community's involvement in our country's military history from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm. These historical treasures reflect upon some of the patriotic men and women from St. Albans, Franklin County and Vermont who have answered their country's call in times of national conflict.

The Margaret Armstrong Room

The Margaret Armstrong Room The Southwest room is dedicated to the founder and first director of the Museum, Margaret Armstrong. The room exhibits an interesting collection of china, some from the homes of two Vermont governors: J. Gregory Smith and Edward C. Smith. The story of the Smith and Brainerd family is told with photographs of the people and the houses they lived in. Nineteenth century parlor amusements are also a feature of this room.
